The architect diagnoses by measuring gateway CPU, active connection count, and request queue depth in the gateway metrics dashboard, then applies: horizontal scaling with a gateway cluster behind a load balancer (or using a managed gateway like AWS API Gateway with auto-scaling), migrating computationally expensive middleware (JWT validation, request transformation) to backend services or an edge cache, implementing L7 load balancing at the gateway tier to distribute traffic based on service health, and adding rate limiting per consumer key to prevent any single client from saturating the gateway.
